Jason Sperling, M.D., F.A.C.S., is board certified in both general and cardiothoracic surgery. He has an academic appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University-Presbyterian Hospital, and has operating privileges both at The Valley Hospital and at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. His cardiac surgery training was completed at the University of Virginia, and cutting edge research in cardiac surgery was done at Harvard University's Children's Hospital in Boston. He has co-authored numerous research papers in well-known peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Bringing expertise from the University of Virginia when he joined The Valley Hospital in 2004, Dr. Sperling created the Thoracic Aneurysm and Bicuspid Aortic Valve Program (TABAV) in order to diminish the incidence of aortic aneurysm complications in our extended community. Consequently, aortic aneurysm (open and endovascular) and aortic valve surgery (repair and replacement) have become a large focus of his practice. He also has the largest active experience in the area with the 'David' Procedure (a special operation for younger patients with aortic root aneurysm).

As Subspecialty Director of the Surgical Atrial Fibrillation Program, Dr. Sperling is proficient in all forms of the Maze operation for atrial fibrillation, including the original Cox-Maze III procedure ('cut-and-sew Maze') as well as newer, less invasive versions of this procedure. He has been a faculty speaker at meetings on the topic of atrial fibrillation and 'continuous monitoring'. As atrial fibrillation often occurs in the setting of mitral valve leaking, mitral valve repair (combined with Maze surgery when necessary) is yet another concentration of his practice.

Dr. Sperling has performed at least 90% of his coronary bypasses using the 'off-pump' technique over the past 4 years, a much higher rate than the national average of approximately 20%. He has pioneered a novel technique of minimally invasive cardiac surgery and is the principal investigator of three clinical trials at The Valley Hospital.

Dr. Sperling can be reached by calling the Valley Columbia Heart Center at 201-447-8418. For more information on the TABAV program, please click here.
